What’s it Mean to “Have a Church”?

I’m in the midst of a new member’s class, encouraging my students to think about what it means to have a church. All too often in Scottish society the public looks at the church as a service provider, like a plumber or a mechanic, to whom we turn when we need something done, never giving thought to the fact “having a church” is something that becomes a part of who we are.

This little clip highlights, in a very funny way, how people, when pressed, often find that “their church” is actually a phantom of their own creation with little if any basis in reality.

At the end of the clip, at the “naming ceremony” the absurdity is brought to its natural end with the inclusion of as many “spiritual leaders” as possible, perhaps in an effort to “cover all the bases.”
